Why did I start The Cross Stitch Podcast? | S1E1

In this episode I will be telling you all about what you will find in The Cross Stitch Podcast and sharing the reasons why I started a podcast about cross stitch. If you scroll to the bottom of this post you will find a list of all the resources I mention in this episode.

As some of you may know, my name is Hannah and I am the creator of/at Hannah Hand Makes. But, this podcast isn’t really going to centre around Hannah Hand Makes; I am trying to build a cross stitch community.

I will be talking about any stitch-a-long’s I am running and might share some of my kits from time to time but it isn’t going to be all about my products, patterns and kits. In fact, I will mainly be sharing these things from other business’ in the form of patterns and kits of the week.

Why start a podcast about cross stitch?

So why did I start a podcast? I only recently started listening to podcasts myself a few months ago. I was looking for advice on Facebook advertising and was recommended to listen to Janet Murray’s podcast (which you can find here).

Honestly, I thought I would hate them. I am not a good listener. In school, when a teacher was talking I would just start day dreaming and I left university after 3 months because I was so bored sitting in a lecture being spoken to for 2-3 hours. I never took anything in.

But podcasting changed all of that. It turns out if you are passionate about the subject you are listening to, you do take it in – who knew?

[2m] So a little story about why I chose to start a podcast. I was so new to podcasting that I didn’t even realise there was a whole app for it, so when I wanted to listen to one of Janet’s podcasts I would go to her website and search what topic I wanted to listen about.

One day, I didn’t really know what I wanted to listen to so I was just going to go to her podcast section and listen to the latest one. But instead of clicking that podcast link, I searched for “podcast”. I didn’t think anything would come up but there were podcast episodes about podcasting so I decided to listen to them.

One of the episodes was with Colin Grey (you can find it here) and he said every business should be podcasting. I didn’t really think this applied to me; how could I podcast about something so visual? But the seed was planted and the more I listened to podcasts the more I wanted my own. So, I decided to start one!

My original plan was to start one in January 2018. There tends to be a little slug after Christmas so I thought this would be the perfect thing to get me motivated again and a bit of an exciting boost. I started researching how to podcast and basically listened to Colin Grey’s entire library (which you can find here).

During all this planning I kept thinking how good it would be if I was starting the podcast before a stitch-a-long I am running in October. Then on one episode of Colin’s he said sometimes it’s best to just start – so I did! And here we are. 2 weeks of cramming and planning and I’ve launched.

How will the podcast run?

[4.25m] A little bit about how the podcast will run now. The aim of the entire podcast is to build a cross stitch community and share as much knowledge as I can with you along with patterns and kits of the week. I am going to be splitting it into series which will have 8-12 short and sweet episodes.

Series one is going to centre around the Christmas stitch-a-long I am running, but it is also going to have some tutorials, a glossary and talks about materials, so you will find it useful even if you’re not taking part.

To read more about the stitch along sign up to my newsletter (where you will also get the free pattern) by scrolling to the bottom of the page or click here to read some blog posts about it.

Series 2 I am hoping to launch early 2018 and I will be diving deeper into the materials used for cross stitch, I’ll be talking about the benefits of cross stitch and hopefully I will have an interview or 2 in there.

I hope this gives you a good idea of what you can find in this podcast but if you have any questions please get in touch at hannahhandmakes@gmail.com. And if you like what you hear don’t forget to hit subscribe on your podcast app.
