Setting the Stitching Mood This Summer

Making your hobby time a little more intentional can help you relax more, and this is how I do that during the Summer.

Sit outside

The best thing about Summer is being able to sit outside. It can be in your garden, a park, a patio, outside at a coffee shop etc. If none of these are an option, try sitting near an open window or by a back door if you have some. Get some fresh air and sunshine on your skin while you’re stitching this season.

Background noise

In the Summer sometimes it’s nice to hear the natural noises; soft breezes, birds, etc. Or you can listen to some music or a podcast. But I love listening to an audiobook and I repeat a few books every Summer; Emily Henry books, Carley Fortune books and One Italian Summer is my favourite Summer audiobook.

Grab a drink

It’s important to stay hydrated so of course, water. But you can also make yourself an easy but fancy drink such as a mocktail, pink lemonade, something fruity, iced tea.

And you can also have a cool box with you with some extras.

Your surroundings

Add some colour with flowers, colourful lights, a plant even if you’re already outside. In my garden we have a 6ft brown fence and lots of green, but that’s it. I hung some fruit themed lights so they look good in the day and night.

You can also add a candle. A Summer scent is perfect or if you’re outside, a citronella candle to try and keep the bugs away.

Your chair

Wherever you’re sitting, make it comfy. Add a pillow, somewhere to put your feet, and something close to keep your supplies close.

Headphones

These are perfect if you’re listening to something outside as they will block out any noises. I find I listen to audiobooks better if I have headphones in.

If you can’t do headphones, try a small bluetooth speaker you can take outside with you.

Drink cover

Keep those flies out of your drink with some sort of cover or a cup with a lid! We made cute cup covers inside the cross stitch club and I use mine outside all the time.

Wipes

I don’t love wet wipes for environmental reasons, but they are handy in the Summer. You can quickly wipe any sun cream, sweat, etc, off your hands so you don’t transfer any of that onto your fabric.

Or you can take tissues and wet one with some water to make your own wet wipe.

Final thoughts

I hope this episode helps you make your stitching time a whole experience rather than a quick grab and stitch when you’re rushed and busy. I save this for the weekend when I know I can sit for an hour in the garden and enjoy my time out there.

Because even though I know fitting stitching into the cracks of our day is the only way to get it done sometimes, it’s also important to make that longer stretch of time for yourself, at least once a week.

And, as this is England, even if it’s not particularly warm and sunny outside all of these ideas work for the inside so I can make it feel like Summer in the house.

Happy stitching!
